Last week, we introduced Monica Burkes, as part of our EDUCATION EMPOWERS series, which highlights stories from students and educators across our businesses. Monica is a self-motivated lifelong learner who decided to pursue further education in her late thirties. Monica encountered multiple obstacles while pursuing her associate degree. From juggling a full-time job to getting married and attending to the needs of elderly parents, she could only manage to take one or two classes at a time. Our California based National Geographic Learning (NGL) team recently hosted about 20 Northern California National Geographic Explorers for a weekend full of learning in Carmel. On Saturday, explorers delivered enlightening talks about their work to local high school students. They graciously stayed until every curious question was answered. These immersive experiences truly help foster a love for exploration, education and appreciation for the world around us. We also extended an invitation to community members who thoroughly enjoyed exploring and experiencing our wide range of NGL products on display. To conclude the weekend, we organized a scenic picnic by the ocean. Janine Wheeler Boylan, Publisher, shared, “we were lucky enough to see a gray whale mother and calf, as well as harbor seals and sea otters in the bay behind us.” We are grateful for the opportunity to connect National Geographic Explorers, students and community members.

According to our recent survey, at least 50% of those who earned college degrees had second thoughts about the program they were studying for. Our study also found that college graduates are worried about whether the skills they’ve gained upon graduation might not be fully applicable to their career fields. Members of our Milady team recently had the opportunity to participate in the Annual Salon Professional Education Company (SPEC) Conference. This three-day event brought together campuses associated with The Salon Professional Academies and Elevate Salon Institutes, nationwide networks of schools dedicated to producing highly skilled salon professionals. With over 260 attendees, including administration, owners, school directors and instructors, the conference provided a platform for deepening knowledge, expanding networks and gaining valuable insights. We were honored to sponsor the keynote speaker, Dan Gingisson, a renowned motivational speaker and author, who shared his expertise on standing out in the marketplace and driving business evolution. The conference concluded with a gala, where campuses that exceeded their goals set by the SPEC Franchise were recognized and celebrated. As a trusted vendor of educational resources and the CIMA platform training resource for these schools nationwide, we had the privilege of presenting the award for "Highest Number of Cosmetology and Barbering Starts." This accolade not only highlights the exceptional efforts of these campuses but also emphasizes the importance of a healthy student count in these programs. This past week, members of our National Geographic Learning team attended the International Career Development Conference hosted by DECA Inc., an international organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. The conference brought together over 23,000 high school students, teacher-advisors, business professionals and alumni to compete in various business-related events, attend workshops and network with industry professionals. Molly Kirk, Marketing Coordinator, shared “our team had an amazing time connecting with CTE teachers and decision-makers on day one of the conference. Day two was filled with excitement as we enjoyed engaging with attendees in our booth and later had a memorable evening at Disney's California Adventure for ‘DECA Night.’ Day three was particularly special as we celebrated students' achievements and proudly awarded our prestigious National Geographic Learning | Cengage Scholarship to two exceptional individuals. Lastly, we were honored to be recognized for our continuous support of DECA's mission over the past five years. Recently, we hosted a Regional Experience at our Kentucky Office for first-year Account Executives (AEs) on the US Higher Ed team. These Regional Experiences take place across the country and provide valuable opportunities to connect with peers, foster regional relationships, shadow successful AEs and gather techniques to enhance their workflows. Christie Decker, Sales Learning & Development Director, expressed, "This unique experience empowered our inside first-year cohort to engage in meaningful discussions and strategic planning with colleagues in their region, fostering a supportive network.
